Raymond Pounds

I've been listening to a ton of Stevie Wonder for the past few weeks, more specifically his album "Songs In The Key Of Life", an absolutely astounding work of art. Anyways, there is a drummer on some of the album named Raymond Pounds. His playing on that album is amazing. Does anyone here know anything about him? I'd love to check out some more of his work. Yeah, Raymond is awesome in this LEGENDARY record.
Sharing the drum chair with Stevie is not an easy thing because he grooves like a badass, but Raymond is a great musician and does a great work.

I just got done posting about Stevie in the Derico thread.

STEVIE!!! Songs in the Key of Life in my favorite work of all time. Greg Brown plays on some track, also. 'As', Greg is on for sure. I just can't say enough about all the musicians on that album, when you just sit back and listen to that, you hear music... one sound, not 13 different people on one track. Stevie is a genius.

I remember an interview with Greg Bissonette and how he audtioned for Stevie and didn't get the gig. He said that Stevie just started grooving in 7 and Greg talked about how hard Stevie could groove that odd time... Greg said he couldn't keep up [img]eek.gif[/img]

The balance of music on the album is amazing... hearing George Benson on 'Another Star' and how perfectly he blends... you only even hear one lick, and even that one lick is PERFECTLY hidden, you only hear it if you are trying to hear George.

God what a great piece of work... oh, and i was born two years after it came out so it is not like i grew up with it, however, i am sure glad i found it!

What about Dennis Davies ?
He did a lot of work with Stevie him too isn't it ?

Michael Sembello is awesome in "Contusion", what a great guitar part...

And what about Herbie Hancock playing some Fender Rhodes in "As", beautiful.

that entire album is breathtaking. "contusion" is one of my favorite songs on it. michael sembello is great on it. greg philliganes is too, i especially enjoy his playing. very tasteful player.

i've had the good fortune of seeing raymond play at my church a few times. once was when abe laboriel sr. came to do a workshop and another was for an anniversary service.

our bass player told me that raymond told him: back in the stevie wonder days. they would do two takes. one for the groove and the other for the fills.

his playing style reminded me of the funk brothers way of playing the kit. not too loud, just grooving.
he was a gentleman too.

Man, this double drumming is awesome !!!
James Jameson on bass I guess, what a bass line, incredible.
But please, check on the 2nd verse the tambourine part, WOW !!!
The tambourine's gospel thing, really nice.

This song is just perfect for me.
But yes, Stevie Wonder...

And I hope that everybody saw this great movie about Motown and the Funk Brothers !!!

That movie, "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown", is great! James Jamerson was unreal. I just picked up a phenomenal box set, "Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971". Breathtaking music, the Funk Brothers are all over this stuff. Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, all the Motown giants. Very worth picking up.
